At least eight passengers were killed after Ethiopian government forces had opened fire on a minibus in North Shoa region of the Amhara region.
Eyewitnesses told APA this weekend that the incident took place about 8:30 a.m on Thursday in Merabete district, Mangate locality.
The minibus, carrying over 20 passengers, was heading to the small town when the soldiers mistaking them for subversives opened fire, killing the civilians on board.
Two of the victims are said to be toddlers. One of the victims was a medical doctor who was returning from Easter celebrations with his family in Ambat area.
Those wounded have been hospitalised in Alem Ketema, Neragna, Debre Birhan and Addis Ababa.
It is not clear if their conditions are life threatening.
Arbitrary killings in the Amhara region have been recurring since the government started law enforcement – a full-fledged and extensive military campaign with deployment of mechanised units and drone strikes.
Although there have been confirmed reports from human rights organisations about arbitrary killings in the area, no perpetrators of tragic killings of civilians have been held accountable.
