In a major move to expand its international logistics reach, Ethiopian Airlines Group has finalized a agreement with American aerospace giant Boeing to purchase ten advanced freighters.
The order comprises eight next-generation Boeing 777-8F models alongside two proven 777F aircraft, cementing the carrier’s strategic shift toward rapid cargo expansion across key global trade corridors.
The order makes Ethiopian Airlines the inaugural African carrier to commit to the Boeing 777-8F. As the newest twin-engine cargo vessel in Boeing’s portfolio, the 777-8F carries a maximum structural payload of 118 tonnes while cutting fuel consumption and operational emissions by 30% compared to earlier models. The design also slashes per-tonne operating expenses by 25% and features a reduced acoustic footprint.
Airline leadership described the acquisition as a critical pillar for the carrier’s long-term network growth. According to Group Chief Executive Officer Mesfin Tasew, the additional heavy-lift capacity will optimize supply chain connections between African economies and foreign markets while enhancing overall operational sustainability. Boeing executive Brad McMullen echoed the sentiment, noting that the order reflects robust international demand for freight transit and deepens a longstanding partnership between both aviation leaders.
Ethiopian Airlines currently operates dedicated cargo services to more than 70 international destinations across five continents. Its existing freight fleet includes twelve Boeing 777Fs, two 767Fs, and four 737-8Fs. The integration of the new 777-8F and 777F aircraft is set to dramatically boost overall air freight capacity as the carrier pursues its long-term ambition to become one of the world’s top 20 most competitive aviation groups.
