The Ethiopian National Defence Force (ENDF) said it has killed 230 Fano fighters in a week-long operation conducted across parts of the Amhara region.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Eastern Command of ENDF said the extremist militants were neutralized in operations carried out between 17 and 23 June 2026 in the North Gojjam, West Gojjam, Awi, and South Gondar zones of the region.
The command said it has also wounded or captured many others in a coordinated offensive conducted in areas where fighters were allegedly hiding, including forested and remote locations.
According to the statement, the operation resulted in the seizure of various weapons and military equipment, including ‘PKM machine guns, Kalashnikov rifles, pistols, DShK components, ammunition’, and other logistical supplies.
The military further claimed that vehicles, motorcycles, and other assets allegedly used by the armed group were captured during the operation.
The statement said several individuals identified as ‘Fano commanders’ were among those killed.
Eastern Command officials, including Brig. Gen. Addisu Mohammed, Brig. Gen. Melaku Gelaneh, and Col. Lijalem Mitiku, were quoted as saying that the operation was aimed at restoring security and weakening what they described as ‘an armed group that has disrupted public life’ in the region.
The Amhara Fano National Movement (AFNM) has not commented on the claims made by the federal army.
AFNM has made its own claims of military gains in South Gondar and Gojjam. Video footage purportedly showing captured government forces has been circulating on social media over the past few days.
