Former Botswana president Festus Mogae has been hospitalised in Gaborone, the Office of the President announced on Tuesday, urging the nation to keep the 86‑year‑old statesman in their thoughts as he receives medical care.
The presidency said Mogae is “unwell” but remains in a stable condition, adding that further updates will be provided should his situation change.
“The former President remains in a stable condition,” the government said in a statement.
No details were released about the nature of his illness.
Mogae, who led Botswana from 1998 to 2008, is widely credited with strengthening the country’s economic management and governance systems during a period of rapid growth driven by diamond revenues.
Before assuming the presidency, he served as finance minister and later vice president, and after leaving office he became a prominent voice on HIV and AIDS advocacy across the region.
His administration was marked by efforts to diversify the economy and maintain fiscal discipline, earning him international recognition, including the Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership in 2008.
The government’s statement called on the public to keep Mogae in their prayers as he continues to receive treatment.
