Forty countries have reaffirmed their support for Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara at the 60th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.
The Central African Republic, speaking on behalf of the group, presented a joint statement that praised the plan as a “credible and pragmatic solution” to the ongoing dispute.
The statement emphasizes that the Sahara issue should be handled exclusively by the UN Security Council, and it warns against any attempt to politicize the Human Rights Council. The signatory countries, which come from various geographical regions, also highlighted the opening of consulates in the Moroccan cities of Laayoune and Dakhla. They view these actions as concrete signs of diplomatic support and as a way to promote economic cooperation and regional development.
Furthermore, the statement supports the resumption of the Geneva round tables, in line with UN Resolution 2756. This resolution reinforces the importance of inclusive dialogue and places the autonomy plan at the center of efforts to find a lasting and mutually acceptable solution.
