Gabon on Tuesday, reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Western Sahara, welcoming the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 on October 31, 2025.
The position was expressed by Gabon’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, Integration and Diaspora, Marie-Edith Tassyla-Ye-Doumbeneny, during a meeting in Rabat with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita.
The Gabonese minister also reiterated her country’s full backing for Morocco’s autonomy plan, describing it as the only credible and realistic solution to the regional dispute over the Sahara.
In a joint statement issued following the talks, she praised the adoption of Resolution 2797 by the UN Security Council, noting that it enshrines—within the framework of Morocco’s sovereignty—the autonomy plan proposed by Rabat as the sole serious, credible, and sustainable basis for reaching a political solution to the dispute.
She further highlighted the opening of a Gabonese Consulate General in Laâyoune in January 2020, describing it as tangible evidence of the strength of the strategic partnership between the two countries and part of the broader momentum of international recognition of Morocco’s territorial integrity.
According to Rabat, Gabon’s position aligns with the international dynamic driven by King Mohammed VI in support of the autonomy plan and Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara.
