South Korean conglomerate HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is looking to transform Casablanca into a strategic hub for Africa’s shipbuilding and maritime industry.
The world’s largest shipbuilder has begun negotiations to secure a 30-year lease on the Casablanca shipyard, with the aim of developing it into a regional industrial base focused on the Atlantic.
Facing capacity constraints at its Asian shipyards and holding a record order book of 451 vessels, HD Hyundai is seeking to relocate part of its operations to high-potential logistics zones. Morocco’s political stability, skilled workforce, and advantageous geographic position make it a strategic choice—mirroring the group’s successful expansions in Vietnam and the Philippines.
The project aligns with Morocco’s national maritime strategy, which aims to boost shipbuilding, repair, and maintenance by leveraging its expanding port infrastructure, including Tanger Med and the upcoming Dakhla Atlantique. If a deal is finalised with Moroccan authorities, Casablanca could become home to the largest shipyard on the African continent.
This future hub would also strengthen Hyundai’s presence in North Africa, catering to growing demand in maritime transport, offshore services, and energy logistics. The initiative is expected to involve technology transfer, local skills development, and the integration of Moroccan companies into the global supply chain.
