The United Nations Security Council will convene an emergency session on Monday to discuss Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as “independent and sovereign state,” APA can report over the weekend.
The session was requested by Somalia, which was one of the 21 African, Arab and Islamic countries that condemned Israeli’s move.
The African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development and Gulf Cooperation Council have also condemned Israel for setting what they called a dangerous precedent.
Israel announced its decision on Friday, days before Somalia is slated to take over the presidency of the UN Security Council.
In the announcement, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the recognition was “in the spirit of the Abraham Accords,” and that the countries would cooperate in “economic, agriculture, [and] in the field of social development.”
Netanyahu was on a video call with Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, as the Israeli leader was signing the official recognition document.
“Before anything else, I want you to know that I am signing now as we speak, Israel’s official recognition of Somaliland and its right of self-determination,” Netanyahu told Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi , who was elected as the fifth president of Somaliland in December 2024.
Israel expressed interest in expanding partnership with the newly recognised Somaliland Republic economically.
President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi has been invited for an official working visit to Israel, the date of which will be at the convenience of the Somaliland leader.
There has also been a report that Donald Trump’s administration had a tendency to recognise Somaliland as an independent state.
United States diplomats and military officials have repeatedly visited Hargeisa, especially after Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi became the president of Somaliland, a break-away region of Somalia.
