Malawi’s state-run power utility ESCOM has announced a 12 percent increase in electricity tariffs with immediate effect, implementing the next phase of a multi‑year pricing plan approved by the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA).
The adjustment forms part of MERA’s 2023–2027 base tariff framework, which authorised four staggered increases of 18, 16, 12 and eight percent.
The latest hike had originally been scheduled for September 2025 but was delayed, a move ESCOM says contributed to mounting operational pressures across electricity procurement, transmission and distribution.
In a statement on Tuesday, ESCOM acknowledged that customers have experienced persistent service challenges, including slow fault resolution and shortages of essential materials.
The utility said the tariff increase is intended to stabilise operations and enable the procurement of equipment needed to improve reliability.
ESCOM said the tariff adjustment would be accompanied by measures aimed at restoring financial sustainability and enhancing service delivery.
