Following the synchronized attacks on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, which targeted several localities in the Kayes region, including Diboli, Gogui, Nioro, Diéma, Bafoulabe, and various industrial sites, regional authorities convened with key stakeholders on Wednesday, July 9.
Addressing a mobilized population, supported by religious leaders and local authorities, Brigadier General Moussa Soumaré, the Governor of Kayes, praised the swift and effective response of the Defense and Security Forces (FDS). Flanked by the Commander of Zone 4, the President of the Regional Council, and the District Prefect, Governor Soumaré stated that the FDS successfully “routed the enemy,” inflicting “considerable losses.”
These attacks, attributed to groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda, targeted strategic infrastructure and vital road networks, resulting in civilian casualties and disrupting trade in this economically crucial region. General Soumaré extended his gratitude to the population for their unwavering support to the security forces and urged continued vigilance and cooperation. He called upon religious leaders to intensify prayers for peace and the FDS, and advised Quranic teachers to enhance supervision of students to prevent them from becoming inadvertently involved in dangerous situations.
Governor Soumaré also clarified that the recently imposed curfew, now in effect from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., is a necessary precautionary measure to facilitate ongoing security operations. He cautioned against the spread of rumors and false information that could incite panic among the populace.
Finally, the governor issued a warning regarding the use of civilian drones, recommending that owners restrict their operations and cooperate fully with military authorities.
These exchanges in the Kayes region, a vital hub for Mali’s supply chain, underscore a collective determination to foster resilience in the face of persistent insecurity.
