Fighters from the Islamic State in the Sahel (EIS) launched a surprise attack on a military outpost in Labbezanga overnight from Thursday to Friday, but were repelled, the Movement for the Salvation of Azawad (MSA) announced on Friday.
According to information released by the MSA, a self-defense group led by Moussa Ag Acharatoumane, a member of the transitional government and ally of Mali’s military authorities, the assault occurred around 2 a.m. near the military post located on the Ansongo road at the outskirts of Labbezanga, in the northern Gao region.
Thanks to the “strong and coordinated response of soldiers on site,” the attack was “quickly contained,” the statement said.
Unable to overcome the Malian forces’ resistance, the attackers were “forced to retreat,” the MSA added, confirming that “the situation in Labbezanga is now fully under control” and that “calm has been restored.”
The incident comes amid heightened insecurity in northern and central Mali, where groups affiliated with both the Islamic State and Al-Qaeda frequently launch attacks targeting security forces and civilians alike.
Located in a strategic area of Gao, Labbezanga has often been the scene of terrorist incursions due to its geographical position.
The MSA did not provide details on casualties or material damage resulting from the overnight assault.
