The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) have significantly intensified their military offensive in the western regions of the country throughout the early months of 2026.
This strategic shift aims to reclaim territory and secure vital corridors between Kayes and Nioro du Sahel, areas that experienced a surge in insurgent activity throughout 2025. According to reports from the General Staff of the Armed Forces (EMGA), the military has successfully neutralized numerous militants and dismantled several operational bases in response to the eighteen major attacks claimed by the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) during the previous year.
On April 18, 2026, the military executed high-precision airstrikes followed by a ground assault on a terrorist hideout in Lakamané, resulting in the total destruction of the site and the seizure of significant logistical assets, including vehicles and communication equipment. Concurrently, a reconnaissance mission north of Kidal successfully identified and neutralized a mobile militant unit. These actions are part of the broader “Dougoukoloko” operations, which have reportedly forced armed groups to retreat from the Kayes region toward the northeast after several of their hideouts near Sandaré were stormed and destroyed.
In addition to combat successes, the army’s recent sweep operations in Yélimané and Ségala led to the deaths of approximately 40 fighters, including a high-ranking insurgent leader. Beyond the tactical gains, these missions have had a direct humanitarian impact, resulting in the rescue of 13 hostages and the recovery of stolen civilian property, such as passenger buses and fuel supplies. The General Staff has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining this momentum, praising the bravery of the units involved and vowing to continue search-and-destroy missions until state authority is fully restored across the national territory.
