Aboubacar “Toumba” Diakité, a key figure in Guinea’s historic 2009 stadium massacre trial, was admitted to intensive care on the night of March 23, 2026.
According to a statement from the Prosecutor General’s Office at the Conakry Court of Appeal, Diakité fell ill while incarcerated at the Coyah Central Prison and was urgently transferred to the Almamy Samory Touré Camp Hospital for specialized medical supervision.
Judicial authorities stated that all necessary measures have been taken to ensure his treatment aligns with legal requirements and the fundamental rights of prisoners. This medical emergency follows a period of heightened tension for the detainee; in February 2026, Diakité was moved from Conakry to the Coyah facility following a prison search that uncovered prohibited items, including weapons and psychotropic substances. During that operation, authorities reported that Diakité became aggressive toward security officers, necessitating his transfer to maintain order.
Diakité was sentenced in July 2024 to ten years in prison for crimes against humanity related to the September 28, 2009, massacre. As his health is closely monitored by hospital staff, the Public Prosecutor’s Office has committed to providing further updates in accordance with national regulations.
