The Mauritanian capital will host the first edition of the Moroccan-Mauritanian Parliamentary Forum on May 9 and 10.
This joint initiative between the National Assembly of Mauritania and the two chambers of the Moroccan Parliament will be held, official sources in Nouakchott announced on Monday.
This meeting aims to “create a space for dialogue, consultation, and lasting Parliamentary cooperation” between the two countries, in the context of increased political rapprochement between Rabat and Nouakchott.
This forum is part of a sustained diplomatic dynamic, recently marked by the visit of the President of the Mauritanian National Assembly, Mohamed Ould Meguett, to Morocco, as well as a series of high-level bilateral meetings.
The project, launched in 2022 and relaunched in early 2024, gained momentum, following the meeting between King Mohammed VI and President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani last December in Casablanca.
A parliamentary friendship group comprising 20 Mauritanian MPs from both the majority and opposition parties was established earlier this year to support this initiative.
On the economic front, Morocco recently offered technical support to Mauritania for the creation of a stock exchange in Nouakchott.
Furthermore, work on the Amgala border crossing, linking the two countries, is over 95 per cent complete, according to government sources.
This Parliamentary forum comes as Moroccan-Mauritanian relations are strengthening in economic, security, and infrastructure terms.
