The Moroccan Royal Air Force (FRA) and American defense giant L3Harris Technologies officially signed a multi-year strategic contract on Monday, July 14.
This agreement covers the comprehensive modernization of several C-130 Hercules transport aircraft, marking a significant new phase in the military cooperation between Rabat and Washington. This partnership has been steadily reinforced through various acquisitions and technology transfers in recent years.
Work on the C-130 fleet will commence this year at L3Harris’s aircraft maintenance and modification facility in Waco, Texas, and is slated to continue through 2029. The modernization efforts will involve extensive avionics updates, engine overhauls, in-depth maintenance of critical components, and structural adjustments. These interventions are designed to extend the operational life of the aircraft, ensuring the Royal Air Force maintains a fully operational fleet capable of meeting its evolving requirements for national security, regional power projection, and humanitarian support. The upgraded C-130s will offer enhanced availability for tactical missions, special operations, and logistical deployments, particularly in challenging, low-infrastructure environments.
“This historic agreement marks the beginning of a long-term strategic partnership with the Royal Air Force to ensure its fleet is ready to tackle any mission,” stated Jason Lambert, president of the Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance department at L3Harris. He added that “evolutionary modifications will improve the overall performance of the aircraft while optimizing their longevity.”
Morocco’s selection of L3Harris, a major American defense firm, reflects its commitment to partnering with technologically advanced entities to modernize its air capabilities. This contract also aligns with a broader strategy to bolster the Moroccan Armed Forces’ (FAR) strategic strength in the region, consistent with the Kingdom’s defensive and diplomatic vision.
