Morocco and Senegal have officially scheduled the 15th session of their High Joint Partnership Commission for January 26 and 27 in Rabat.
The agreement was finalized during a telephone conversation on Wednesday evening between Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch and his Senegalese counterpart, Ousmane Sonko. A central feature of this high-level meeting will be the Moroccan-Senegalese Economic Forum, which is set to take place on the sidelines of the commission to further integrate the private sectors of both nations.
During their discussion, the two leaders commended the exceptional and strategic depth of the bilateral relationship, which continues to flourish under the guidance of King Mohammed VI and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. They emphasized that the bond between the two countries is built on a solid foundation of human, religious, and economic ties. This upcoming session is the result of diplomatic groundwork laid in late 2025, following official visits and meetings between Senegalese Foreign Minister Cheikh Niang and Moroccan officials.
From an economic perspective, Morocco currently holds the position of Senegal’s top African supplier, outperforming other major economies like Egypt and South Africa. Data from the National Agency for Statistics and Demography indicates that Senegalese imports from Morocco reached approximately $194 million in the first nine months of 2025. These trade flows consist primarily of essential goods such as phosphate fertilizers, construction materials, and processed food products.
While the trade balance currently favors Morocco, with Senegal recording a trade deficit of about $152 million for the same period, the Kingdom remains an indispensable partner for Senegalese development. The January meetings are expected to address this trade dynamic while exploring new avenues for mutual investment. By formalizing these dates, both governments have reaffirmed their commitment to a partnership that serves as a model for South-South cooperation on the African continent.
