King Mohammed VI of Morocco, in his capacity as Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee, has ordered the immediate delivery of approximately 180 tonnes of emergency humanitarian and medical aid to the Palestinian people, specifically targeting the civilian population in the Gaza Strip who are facing an exceptionally severe humanitarian crisis.
This royal initiative, announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Living Abroad on Wednesday, aligns with Morocco’s ongoing commitment to the Palestinian cause.
The substantial aid package includes basic foodstuffs, infant formula, and nutritional products tailored for children. It also comprises a large consignment of medicines and surgical equipment intended for Gaza’s overwhelmed hospitals. Additionally, durable tents, blankets, and various emergency supplies will be delivered to address the most urgent needs of displaced populations.
This exceptionally large-scale logistics operation will utilize a specially designed route to ensure rapid, secure, and direct delivery to Palestinian beneficiaries. This operational flexibility aims to bypass the logistical bottlenecks that have hindered many international aid operations in the enclave, ensuring effective access to those most in need.
Unwavering commitment to the Palestinian cause
With this initiative, the Moroccan sovereign reaffirms the Kingdom’s unwavering commitment to the Palestinian cause, both politically and humanitarianly. This royal decision is part of a continuing tradition of active solidarity with the Palestinian population. In recent years, this commitment has been demonstrated through airlifts, the establishment of mobile clinics, and humanitarian relief missions carried out by the Royal Air Force. Morocco’s chairmanship of the Al-Quds Committee, a body under the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), grants the Kingdom a unique and influential role in supporting the Palestinians. This commitment extends beyond symbolism, translating into concrete, coordinated, and regularly renewed actions based on needs identified on the ground.
The humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip remains critical. United Nations agencies have issued warnings about depleted food stocks, severely overcrowded hospitals, persistent insecurity, and a dire lack of vital resources. Reports indicate that over 80 percent of health infrastructure is either partially or completely out of service, leaving displaced populations without sustainable access to water, electricity, or safe shelter.
Notably, in March 2024, Morocco launched an unprecedented initiative: humanitarian aid shipments (approximately 40 tonnes) were transported to Gaza by land via Israel, following air transit to Tel Aviv. This marked a global first in the direct delivery of aid to the Gaza Strip.
