Burkina Faso has marked a significant milestone in its medical history with the successful completion of its first-ever kidney transplant.
This groundbreaking achievement was announced during a press briefing on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, chaired by the Minister of Health, Dr. Robert Lucien Jean-Claude Kargougou.
The Burkinabe Minister of Health hailed this as an “important and historic milestone” in the treatment of patients suffering from kidney disease across the nation.
The complex surgical procedure was performed by doctors at the Tengandogo University Hospital, with crucial support from Turkish specialists. The operation involved replacing a patient’s diseased kidney with a healthy one donated by her twin sister, as explained by Dr. Kargougou.
This medical feat in Burkina Faso opens up new therapeutic perspectives for patients afflicted with end-stage chronic kidney failure, offering renewed hope for improved health outcomes.
