A Lagos-based Eja-Ice Nigeria Limited has introduced solar-powered refrigeration and cold chain solutions to cut food waste and boost food sustainability in Nigeria.
The Chief Executive Officer of the firm, Yusuf Bilesanmi, said the innovation marked a major step forward for Nigeria’s cold chain industry.
Speaking at the company’s first-ever product showcase, Bilesanmi,said: “We are thrilled to present our innovative solutions that not only meet current market demands but also pave the way for future sustainability.”
He noted that Nigeria loses about N3.5tn annually to post-harvest food losses, largely due to poor cold storage facilities, stressing that the figure represents nearly 40 per cent of the nation’s total food production.
According to him, smallholder farmers are the worst hit, losing up to 35 per cent of their income as produce spoils before reaching the market.
In a statement, the company said that its solar-powered technology would help keep food fresh for longer using reliable and energy-efficient refrigeration powered by the sun.
“By reducing food loss and lowering greenhouse gas emissions, we’re building a more sustainable food system,” the statement said.
It added that visitors explored the company’s latest technology in cold storage and transport for food, medicine and other temperature-sensitive items. Eja-Ice also showcased its partnerships with major brands working to reduce food waste nationwide.
“With our solar cold chain technology, we’re changing how food is preserved in Nigeria. We’re improving energy use and protecting product quality nationwide,” Bilesanmi said, adding that the firm’s solutions will play a vital role in fighting hunger, saving money, and protecting the environment.
