Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has called for closer cooperation between Nigeria and the United Kingdom (UK) with a focus on security, governance and economic ties.
Speaking at the State Banquet hosted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle in the UK, Tinubu stated that both countries share longstanding institutional links and should strengthen collaboration in response to current challenges.
He noted that Nigeria’s legal and parliamentary systems have roots in British traditions and that both nations should continue to benefit from shared democratic values and administrative frameworks.
Tinubu highlighted the role of Nigerians living in the UK, particularly healthcare professionals working within the National Health Service, describing them as key part of the bilateral ties.
According to him, the visibility of British-Nigerians in sports and other sectors are evidence of the ongoing people-to-people connections.
On security, Tinubu noted that Nigeria faces continued threats linked to instability in the Sahel region and stressed the need for cooperation with the UK in addressing terrorism and regional instability.
“In confronting these threats, partnership with the United Kingdom remains essential.
“Our partnership remains essential as we confront threats to regional stability and safeguard peace in West Africa,” he said.
He also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the Commonwealth of Nations, describing it as a platform for multilateral engagement.
Tinubu is scheduled to meet with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to discuss security and economic issues, while others official engagements aimed at strengthening diplomatic and strategic relations between both countries will also hold today.
