President Cyril Ramaphosa has reappointed Mosotho Moepya as chairperson of South Africa’s Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to oversee the country’s electoral processes for another seven years.
Joining him are Judge Dhaya Pillay, appointed as a part-time commissioner and Joyce Pitso who will serve as a full-time member.
Moepya, a seasoned electoral official, has served the IEC in various capacities since 1998.
He was appointed IEC chairperson in October 2022, having been appointed commissioner in November 2018 for a seven-year term.
Before that he held various positions at the IEC, including Director for Electoral Logistics; Senior Manager for Electoral Logistics, Planning and Infrastructure; Deputy Chief Electoral Officer for Electoral Operations: and Chief Electoral Officer.
His appointment signals continuity and institutional knowledge at a time when the commission faces complex challenges, including digital transformation and voter engagement.
The appointments come at a pivotal moment for South Africa’s democracy, with the IEC preparing for upcoming local government elections amid growing public scrutiny and calls for electoral reform.
Established in 1996, the IEC is a constitutionally mandated body responsible for managing free and fair elections in South Africa.
Its duties include voter registration, election logistics and ensuring compliance with electoral laws.
The commission plays a critical role in maintaining public trust in the democratic process.
