Former Senegalese President Macky Sall is reaffirming the need to restore trust in the United Nations and the multilateral system.
He speaking at the Jeju Peace and Prosperity Forum in the Republic of Korea on Thursday.
Speaking on the panel entitled “Reinventing Multilateralism,” the former Senegalese head of state, Macky Sall, emphasized the importance of strengthening the credibility of international institutions in the face of the geopolitical, security, economic, and climate crises shaking the world.
“It is essential to restore trust in multilateralism and in the UN,” he said, asserting that the organization remains an indispensable framework for promoting dialogue, cooperation, and the search for collective solutions to global challenges.
Ex President Sall also emphasised the role of the UN Secretary-General, whom he described as a “bridge-builder” between states and a “catalyst for cooperation” in an international context marked by growing tensions and a fragmentation of international relations.
The former Senegalese president also advocated for resilience to become one of the guiding principles of the next global agenda.
According to him, international institutions must be better equipped to address conflicts, economic shocks, health crises, and the consequences of climate change.
Since leaving office in April 2024, Macky Sall has made numerous appearances at major international forums dedicated to global governance, sustainable development, and the reform of the multilateral system.
His participation in the Jeju Forum is part of this ongoing effort to maintain a presence on the international diplomatic stage. The former head of state finally thanked the South Korean authorities for their invitation to this annual meeting, considered one of the main spaces for dialogue in Asia on issues of peace, cooperation and global governance.
