The Mauritanian government has announced the upcoming start of operations at a gold mine in Ghabou, in the Guidimakha region (south).
This major project is expected to generate over a thousand jobs, according to the Mauritanian Information Agency (AMI).
The Ghabou gold mine project was highlighted during the Mauritanian Council of Ministers meeting held on Wednesday, after which several government members detailed the main decisions, the agency reports.
The Minister of Mines and Industry indicated that this mine, operated by the company SD Mining Ghabou SA, should begin production in the coming months. It is part of the national strategy for developing mineral resources.
A project with a strong economic impact
According to the authorities, the Ghabou mine is expected to create 1,000 to 1,200 direct and indirect jobs, representing a significant boost to the local economy in the Guidimakha region (south).
The government reiterated that legislation prioritises the recruitment of Mauritanian workers. In cases where local skills are insufficient, the use of foreign expertise is permitted, but is governed by a two- to three-year skills transfer programme.
A broader mining dynamic
The authorities also indicated that this mine is part of a series of mining projects expected in the coming years, particularly by 2027 and 2028, confirming the growing importance of the extractive sector in the national economy.
The government presents this development as an opportunity for economic diversification, job creation, and increased public revenue.
