Togolese Minister of Security activated the ORSEC emergency response plan after a collision between a tricycle and a foreign truck, neither of which was registered for passenger transport.
The serious traffic accident left 14 persons dead, including two minors, and 58 injured on Sunday, March 8, 2026, around noon on the “Mountain Road” in the commune of Kozah, Kozah Prefecture, in northern Togo.
According to a statement from the Togolese Ministry of Security received by APA, the tragedy involved a tricycle and a truck with foreign license plates and neither of them was intended for passenger transport.
However, people were on board both vehicles at the time of the collision. Upon being informed, the Minister of Security activated the ORSEC emergency response plan, enabling the rapid deployment of emergency services.
The 58 injured were evacuated to medical facilities, according to the Togolese authorities.
Initial findings indicate a tire blowout followed by a technical failure as the likely cause of the accident.
Investigations are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances and determine responsibility.
The Minister, Colonel Calixte Batossie Madjoulba has offered the government’s condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
He also called on all road users to “reaffirm their responsibility,” emphasizing the dangers of using vehicles unsuitable for transporting passengers.
The Togolese government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening road safety prevention, awareness, and enforcement efforts.
