Russian President Vladimir Putin has appointed Viktor Voropayev as the new ambassador to Niger, replacing Igor Gromyko.
Gromyko will continue to serve as the Russian ambassador to Mali, a position he has held since 2019.
Viktor Voropayev, who has previously served as the Russian consul general in Hurghada, Egypt, and as a counselor at the Russian embassy in Tunisia, will assume his new duties in Niamey. His appointment comes ahead of the official opening of the new Russian diplomatic mission in Niger, which is scheduled for late 2025, according to Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
The Russian embassies in Mali and Niger currently share the same address in Bamako.
