Senegal reaffirmed its dedication to regional stability and Sahel-Saharan cooperation during the official reopening of the Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CEN-SAD) headquarters in Tripoli.
Representing Senegal at this high-level assembly, the Minister of African Integration and Foreign Affairs, Mr. Cheikh Niang, emphasized the institutional revitalization of the organization. The event transitioned into a critical political dialogue centered on navigating the complex security, economic, and climate challenges currently facing the Sahel region. The reopening serves as a symbolic and functional catalyst for member states to better coordinate development policies and enhance the freedom of movement across the regional bloc.
During the mission, Minister Niang engaged in high-level diplomatic discussions with Libyan Prime Minister Abdel Hamid Dbeibah and interim Foreign Minister Taher Salem Al-Baour. These talks focused on reviewing the bilateral relationship between Dakar and Tripoli, specifically targeting new avenues for cooperation in diplomacy, migration, and security. Both parties highlighted the importance of a unified approach to regional challenges, viewing the revitalization of CEN-SAD as a primary vehicle for achieving continental solidarity and shared economic prosperity.
Beyond governmental negotiations, the Minister met with representatives of the Association of Senegalese Living in Libya to address the specific needs of the diaspora. The dialogue centered on improving residency conditions and streamlining administrative processes, alongside government-backed assistance programs for housing and repatriation. Minister Niang reiterated that the diaspora remains a fundamental pillar of national development, pledging strengthened consular protection as Senegal continues to consolidate its influence within African regional organizations and bilateral partnerships.
