Senegal has firmly established itself as a global benchmark for extractive sector transparency, achieving a remarkable overall score of 89 out of 100 in the implementation of the 2023 EITI Standard.
This high performance was formally recognized by the Board of Directors of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative during its meeting on Wednesday, March 18, 2026. The assessment evaluated three critical pillars—stakeholder engagement, transparency, and results and impact—highlighting Senegal’s significant progress in maintaining an open, responsible, and inclusive management system for its natural resources.
The international body particularly commended the Senegalese authorities for their detailed and timely reporting, as well as their proactive role in promoting legal reforms. These reforms have been instrumental in enabling the public disclosure of beneficial owners for all companies operating within the country’s extractive sector. Out of the various requirements measured, Senegal achieved an exceptional level in three areas and maintained very good or good performance in twenty-seven others, with only a single requirement identified as having limited progress.
As an international standard aimed at strengthening the governance of oil, gas, and mineral resources, the EITI mandates the regular publication of revenues to combat corruption and promote equitable management. By aligning closely with these 2023 standards, Senegal is actively optimizing the management of its extractive revenues while strengthening accountability. These achievements are seen as a vital step in consolidating the trust of both national citizens and international investors in a sector that remains strategic for the country’s economic future.
