Senegal has recorded 57 confirmed cases of diphtheria, including eight deaths, since the first case was confirmed on August 1, 2026, according to a status update published by the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene.
As of September 8, 2026, the Kedougou region (southeast) accounts for the highest number of
cases, with 27 confirmed infections across the districts of Kedougou (18), Saraya (7), and Salemata (2).
Dakar and Thies (west) each have seven cases. In Dakar, six cases were identified in Guediawaye and one in Keur Massar, while in Thies, six cases were recorded in Mbour and one in Thiadiaye.
Louga (northwest) has a total of eight cases, including five in Kebemer and three in Darou Moukhty. Diourbel has four cases, distributed between Touba (3) and Mbacke (1).
The regions of Kaolack (centre), Matam (north), and Kolda (south) have recorded two, one, and one case, respectively.
The two cases in Kaolack were identified in the Kaolack and Guinguinéo districts, while the cases in Matam and Kolda were recorded in Matam and Vélingara, respectively.
The ministry notes that diphtheria is an infectious and contagious disease that can be prevented through vaccination.
Symptoms may include a sore throat, fever, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, neck swelling, or the presence of greyish membranes in the throat.
Transmission occurs primarily through respiratory droplets released when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It can also be transmitted through direct contact with contaminated objects or fabrics.
In light of this situation, the ministry urges parents to adhere to the Expanded Programme on Immunization schedule, check their children’s vaccination status, and administer any missing doses if necessary.
It also recommends seeking prompt medical attention at the nearest health facility as soon as the first symptoms appear and avoiding self-medication.
