A week after Senegal confirmed its first imported case of Mpox, health officials have announced that the patient has fully recovered and no new infections have been reported.
On Monday, September 1, 2025, the Ministry of Health and Social Action announced the complete recovery of the foreign national who tested positive for Mpox on August 22. The patient, who entered the country on August 19, was isolated and treated at Fann Hospital. He has since been discharged.
According to authorities, 30 people who had come into contact with the patient were closely monitored, and no new suspected cases were detected. This brings the number of active cases in Senegal down to zero.
While the case highlighted the ongoing threat in the region, particularly with sporadic infections in nearby Gambia, the overall trend across Africa is positive. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that confirmed cases have declined by 34.5% over the past six weeks, thanks to a collaborative effort from African nations and health organizations. Several countries, including Côte d’Ivoire and Angola, have not reported new cases in more than six weeks, indicating that the epidemic is gradually being brought under control.
The Senegalese ministry is urging the public to remain vigilant and continue practicing good hygiene. It has reaffirmed its commitment to transparently communicating about the situation to ensure public health security.
