Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye hosted a grand reception for the Lions of Teranga at the presidential palace on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, following their historic victory in the 35th Africa Cup of Nations.
The ceremony followed a massive day-long parade through the streets of Dakar, where thousands of fans gathered to celebrate the team’s 1-0 extra-time win over host nation Morocco. During the event, President Faye lauded the squad’s courage and determination, noting that their performance had restored national pride and secured Senegal’s second continental star.
In recognition of their achievement, the President announced a substantial reward package for the entire delegation. Each player was awarded 75 million CFA francs and a 1,500 square meter plot of land on the prestigious Petite Côte. Coaching and technical staff received 50 million CFA francs and 1,000 square meter plots, while other support staff were granted 20 million CFA francs and 500 square meters. Additionally, the Ministry of Sports received 305 million CFA francs to distribute among its personnel in honor of the successful campaign.
The evening was marked by high honors as President Faye conferred the rank of Commander in the National Order of the Lion upon coach Pape Thiaw and all 28 players. Abdoulaye Fall, the president of the Senegalese Football Federation, was elevated to the rank of Grand Officer. The President specifically highlighted the leadership of Sadio Mané, praising his consistency and role as a peacemaker during the high-tension final in Rabat.
Amidst the celebrations, the President took a moment to honor the memory of Aida Faye, a Senegalese student who tragically passed away in Morocco during the tournament. He also extended his sincere thanks to King Mohammed VI and the Moroccan people for their hospitality toward the Senegalese delegation, emphasizing the deep fraternal bonds that link the two nations despite the intensity of the sporting competition.
