Sierra Leone has officially joined the International Energy Forum (IEF), marking a strategic move to deepen its participation in the global energy dialogue.
The nation formalized its membership by signing an agreement with the IEF during the African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energies 2025 conference on Tuesday.
The agreement was signed by IEF Secretary General Jassim AlShirawi and Foday B. L. Mansaray, Director General of the Petroleum Directorate of Sierra Leone. The IEF aims to strengthen Africa’s position in international energy discussions, focusing on energy security, market transparency, and a fair energy transition.
“We want to give Africa a voice to address the challenges and opportunities facing the African energy sector,” stated AlShirawi as he welcomed Sierra Leone.
This membership comes at a critical time as Sierra Leone accelerates development in its oil, gas, and energy sectors. The country is preparing to kickstart its first offshore drilling program since 2012 and is set to launch its next licensing round in October 2025. By joining the IEF, Sierra Leone stands to gain from direct engagement with global partners, which will also aid its simultaneous effort to develop a local oil refinery for enhanced fuel security.
Mansaray expressed enthusiasm for the move: “We are excited to be part of the IEF where we can share our ideas. We look forward to a long-term partnership.”
