South Africa’s energy regulator said it registered 124 renewable generation facilities in the first quarter of the 2026/27 financial year, adding 804 megawatts (MW) of solar and wind capacity valued at R20.18 billion ($1.2 billion).
The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) reported on Monday that 122 solar photovoltaic facilities contributed 236MW while two wind projects added 568 MW between April and June 2026.
Of the new facilities, 63 are connected to municipal distribution networks and 61 to Eskom’s grid.
NERSA said applications were processed within an average of 10 working days, an improvement on the previous year.
Since the registration regime began in 2018, 2,619 facilities with a combined 20,131 MW have been approved, representing R409 billion in investment.
The regulator said the latest approvals will strengthen grid reliability, expand generation capacity and accelerate South Africa’s transition to a renewable‑based electricity sector.
