Police in South Africa’s Eastern Cape have arrested two men in connection with the murder of former world boxing champion Zolani Tete who was fatally shot at the weekend.
Eastern Cape police said the suspects were taken into custody in Ku Gompo on Saturday and are being questioned in connection with Tete’s killing and the attempted murder of a 27-year-old woman who was wounded in the attack.
Tete, 38, was shot outside his home as he waited in his car for the gate to open.
The shooting occurred when two armed men wearing balaclavas allegedly got out of another vehicle and opened fire on Tete and the woman travelling with him.
Tete was among South Africa’s most successful boxers, winning world titles in two weight divisions. His death has drawn attention to his decorated career, which included world championship success in the junior bantamweight and bantamweight divisions.
He also held a Guinness World Record for the fastest knockout in a world title fight.
