A StarSky plane carrying 55 passengers overran the runway at Mogadishu’s Aden Adde International Airport and tumbled onto the shoreline, AirLive has reported.
All 55 passengers and crew on board were safe, according to the AirLive report seen by APA on Tuesday.
The aircraft, which belongs to the local airline StarSky, left Aden Adde International Airport and went down on the shoreline of the Indian Ocean in an area not far from the airport perimeter.
Witnesses near the Jasiira beach spotted the plane flying unusually low before it skipped across the shallow water and landed on the shoreline, according to AirLive reports.
Photos from the scene appeared to show the plane’s wing completely detached as onlookers gathered around to watch.
Authorities confirmed the aircraft was cleared for an emergency landing, but during the touchdown, it veered off the runway, went over a cliff, and came to rest on the beach.
“Rescue teams quickly attended the scene, and all passengers and crew were evacuated without serious injuries,” the report said.
Airport officials said an investigation into the incident is underway to determine the exact cause of the runway overrun. Flight operations at the airport were briefly affected as emergency teams secured the site.
