Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s leading carrier, said it has earned $4.4 billion in revenue during the first six months of the current Ethiopian fiscal year that began on July 8, 2025.
Briefing journalists on Tuesday in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, Mesfin Tasew, group chief executive officer (CEO) of the Ethiopian Airlines, said the revenue saw a 14 percent growth compared to the same period of the previous year.
According to the CEO, the airline transported 10.64 million passengers on international and domestic routes during the reporting period. The national carrier also transported 451,000 tons of cargo during the period.
Ethiopian Airlines currently serves 145 international destinations, including three newly launched routes.
“In terms of revenue, we generated 4.4 billion U.S. dollars during the first half-year of the current fiscal year. The revenue is 2 percent higher than the plan and showed a 14 percent growth compared to the revenue earned during the same period last year,” Tasew said.
Tasew went on saying that shortage of aircrafts, bad weather; conflicts in different parts of the world and global uncertainty were some of the operational challenges facing the airline.
He said the U.S. visa policies under President Donald Trump, which restricted entry and limited visa issuance for certain travelers particularly from those people from Africa affected the airlines’ operation
“U.S policies have forced us to reschedule flights, which reduced the number of frequencies on some routes,” he said, adding domestic security challenges also impacted the airlines’ operation.
Ethiopian Airlines, one of Africa’s largest and fastest-growing airlines, is currently implementing a 15-year strategic plan called Vision 2035. As part of this vision, the airline is striving to become one of the most competitive and leading aviation groups in the world by providing safe, secure, market-driven, and customer-focused passenger and cargo transport, aviation training, airport management, and ground services.
