Tunisian President Kais Saied met with the President of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohamed Younes Menfi, on Monday, August 18, during his working visit to Tunisia.
A statement from the Tunisian presidency noted that the visit is part of the “brotherly and historic relations” that unite the two nations. The leaders emphasized the depth of their historical ties and expressed a shared commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation in security, development, and economic integration.
During their meeting at Carthage Palace, President Saied reiterated that Tunisia’s security is inextricably linked to Libya’s, emphasizing the need for a coordinated approach to face common challenges. He stressed that regional stability can only be guaranteed through a focus on mutual interests. The Tunisian head of state also reaffirmed his country’s consistent position that the Libyan crisis requires an exclusive, internal solution, free from foreign interference. He believes that only the Libyan people have the legitimacy to define their political future.
In addition to bilateral relations, the two leaders discussed the situation in the Middle East. President Saied condemned what he called “crimes of genocide” committed by Israeli forces in Gaza, accusing them of depriving the Palestinian population of food, water, and medicine. He reaffirmed Tunisia’s unwavering support for the right of the Palestinian people to establish an independent and sovereign state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
By framing their cooperation as a strategic partnership, Tunisia and Libya are demonstrating their resolve to build an axis of stability in the Maghreb, particularly in a context marked by regional uncertainties and power rivalries.
