Mobile payments in Tunisia have experienced a remarkable surge, recording a sixfold increase in transactions during the first quarter of 2025.
This significant growth is attributed to a strategic plan by the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT) aimed at accelerating the digitalization of payments, reducing cash usage, and bolstering financial inclusion.
Compared to the same period in 2024, the number of mobile payment transactions soared to two million operations. The total value processed during this period exceeded 600 million Tunisian dinars, equivalent to approximately €196 million.
This impressive expansion is primarily driven by the increasing adoption of electronic wallets, which now number 371,000, and the successful development of innovative local solutions such as E-Houwiya and Paysmart.
An analysis of transaction types reveals that money transfers constitute the majority, accounting for 51.4 percent of all mobile payment activities. This is followed by merchant payments at 33.3 percent, cash-in operations (deposits) at 9.4 percent, and cash-out operations (withdrawals) at 5.9 percent. The robust performance signals a significant shift towards a more digitized payment ecosystem in Tunisia.
