Tunisian President Kais Saied on Wednesday received a special envoy from Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani at the Carthage Palace, reaffirming the two countries’ commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation.
According to a statement from the Tunisian presidency, Mauritanian Foreign Minister Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug delivered a written message from President El Ghazouani.
The meeting allowed both sides to review relations between Tunisia and Mauritania, which are based on long-standing historical, cultural and religious ties.
The Tunisian presidency specifically mentioned relations dating back to the Sanhaja era, when Kairouan and the Chinguetti region maintained close exchanges.
During the discussions, Kais Saied reaffirmed Tunisia’s commitment to further developing its cooperation with Mauritania, particularly in the economic, trade, cultural and scientific sectors.
The Tunisian head of state also recalled Tunis’s long-standing support for Nouakchott since Mauritania’s independence, as well as its support within several regional and international organisations.
The discussions also focused on developments in the international situation within a context marked by profound geopolitical and economic transformations.
According to the Tunisian presidency, the two leaders discussed the challenges facing African countries and the need to strengthen cooperation on issues of common interest.
Saied emphasized the importance of increased coordination among African states to address global changes and defend their strategic interests.
He advocated for a convergence of visions and positions to contribute to the emergence of a more balanced and equitable international order.
This visit is part of the regular consultations between Tunis and Nouakchott, as the two countries seek to deepen their bilateral relations and strengthen their cooperation on regional and continental issues.
