Water reserves in Tunisia have increased, though dam fill rates remain limited to 55%, according to the State Secretariat for Water Resources.
The country recorded a 200 million cubic meter rise in water stored in its dams compared to 2024.
Despite this improvement, the overall reservoir fill rate remains below seasonal averages, the authority noted.
To support this modest hydrological recovery, Tunisia has launched several initiatives, including the installation of smart water meters, already operational in Djerba and set to expand to other regions — including those supplied by desalinated water.
The growing integration of solar energy into water infrastructure is also gaining momentum, with two photovoltaic projects underway in Tozeur and Sfax.
Tunisia is increasingly relying on non-conventional water sources. Three desalination plants are currently operational in Djerba, Sfax, and Zarzis, while two additional facilities are under study in Mahdia and Zarzis.
