The United States Department of Defense has officially notified Congress of a proposed arms sale to the Kingdom of Morocco valued at approximately $825 million.
This procedural step, published in the Federal Register on January 12, 2026, is a mandatory requirement under the Arms Export Control Act before any final contract can be signed. The potential deal involves the acquisition of 600 FIM-92K Stinger Block I man-portable surface-to-air missiles, a move that reinforces the strategic defense partnership between Washington and Rabat.
The notification originally stems from a request made by Moroccan authorities in April 2025, which the U.S. government deemed favorable due to Morocco’s status as a Major Non-NATO Ally. Washington views the Kingdom as a cornerstone of political stability and economic progress in North Africa. Beyond the delivery of the high-tech missiles, the $825 million package includes comprehensive support services such as engineering, logistics, and technical assistance from both the U.S. government and private contractors, specifically RTX Corporation and Lockheed Martin.
The FIM-92K Stinger Block I system is a lightweight, autonomous air defense tool designed for rapid deployment by ground units to neutralize low-altitude aerial threats. U.S. officials have noted the technological sensitivity of the equipment, which carries a secret classification. However, the Department of Defense expressed confidence that Morocco possesses the necessary capabilities to safeguard these sensitive technologies at a level equivalent to American standards.
Importantly, the Pentagon has clarified that the implementation of this sale would not require the deployment of additional U.S. personnel to Moroccan territory. Furthermore, the Defense Department maintains that the proposed transaction will not alter the fundamental military balance in the region. While the Congressional notification marks a critical institutional milestone, it does not yet constitute a final delivery authorization, but rather serves as a clear indication of the deepening security ties between the two nations.
