The United Nigeria Airlines has signed an aircraft acquisition agreement with the United States-based Southwest Airlines for the purchase of six Boeing 737-800 aircraft, marking a milestone in the carrier’s fleet expansion move.
According to the statement by the airline on Sunday, the deal was sealed at a formal signing ceremony held at Southwest Airlines’ corporate headquarters in Dallas, Texas and it will position United Nigeria Airlines for broader operations across domestic, regional, and international routes.
It added that the addition of the Boeing 737-800 aircraft, known for its fuel efficiency, performance, and passenger comfort, will enhance capacity, reduce operational costs, and support Nigeria’s aviation growth in line with the government’s economic development policies.
The Boeing 737-800 has a range of approximately 2,935 nautical miles and can seat up to 189 passengers in a single-class layout.
Speaking on the development, Executive Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, Prof Obiora Okonkwo, said, “This is a step further. After four years of consistent and reliable operations, upgrading to the Boeing 737-800 allows us to scale our services profitably while offering enhanced travel options to Nigerians and other African passengers.”
The airline stated that the agreement includes a long-term partnership element with Southwest Airlines. “United Nigeria will benefit from continued technical support, including maintenance cooperation and crew training assistance, reinforcing safety and operational excellence across its fleet,” Okonkwo added.
The airline boss further explained that the six aircraft are just the beginning of a larger expansion plan. “We have expressed interest in acquiring an additional four Boeing 737-800 NG aircraft, which would bring our total to ten. These will be delivered between Q1 2026 and Q1 2027.

“With this upgrade, we can now operate more direct flights into approved destinations, eliminate long layovers, improve passenger experience, and drive better cargo movement all at competitive fares,” Okonkwo added.
In his remarks, the Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Boeing Africa, Anbessie Yitbarek, welcomed the partnership, describing it as a significant endorsement of the Boeing 737 family.
“We are pleased to welcome United Nigeria Airlines to the 737 family with its first 737-800. This aircraft offers the superior reliability, fuel efficiency, and returns that operators need in today’s competitive aviation environment,” Yitbarek said.
Both United Nigeria and its new partner confirmed that discussions are ongoing to broaden their collaboration, with Southwest Airlines expected to play a continued support role even after delivery of the aircraft.
