Amad Diallo helped Cote d’Ivoire seal victory against Ecuador in their opening game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Sunday, edging Ecuador 1-0 thanks to a moment of brilliance in the closing stages of the match.
The first half proved highly competitive and intense. Despite enjoying only 45 percent possession, the Elephants were forced onto the back foot by repeated Ecuadorian attacks.
The Ivorian defence came under sustained pressure and was rescued twice by the crossbar.
Three key Ivorian players – Seko Fofana, Franck Kessié and Guéla Doué – were booked during the opening 45 minutes.
After the break, head coach Emerse Faé made tactical adjustments that revitalised his side. The substitutions injected fresh energy into the team and the changes ultimately proved decisive.
The breakthrough came in the 90th minute when defender Wilfried Singo delivered a precise assist for Diallo who calmly found the net to secure victory and spark celebrations among Ivorian supporters.
“We dropped too deep towards the end of the first half,” Ivorian coach Emerse Faé admitted after the match.
He nevertheless praised the maturity and experience of his squad.
“My players have experience. This result brings us closer to our first objective, which is reaching the knockout stage,” he said.
With a crucial opening victory secured, Côte d’Ivoire have taken an important step towards qualification.
Their next challenge comes on 20 June when they face Germany in Toronto, Canada.
