President Adama Barrow has held talks with the new Commonwealth Secretary General Shirley Ayokor Botchwey, in Banjul during which issues of migration and elections featured.
Accordng to a statement from his office on Wednesday, Barrow’s talks with the Commonwealth scribe focused on deepening engagement and identifying areas for continued cooperation.
Other issues discussed were human rights, migration management, and the establishment of a diplomatic academy in The Gambia in the near future.
President Barrow assured the leader of the Commonwealth of his country’s unalloyed support for steering the organisation in a new direction of strengthened partnership and cooperation for the economic growth of its members.
The Gambian leader urged Commonwealth members to create wealth and facilitate financing empowerment programmes for women and young people.
He also requested the organisation to support reparations as recommended by the erstwhile trut commission and help towards enhancing the reputation of Gambia’s justice system.
The Commonwealth Secretary-General reaffirmed Banjul of the organisation’s unwavering commitment to assisting the country particularly in building resilience in its democracy.
