At least 39 vigilantes in Ethiopia’s Amhara region, were killed after rebels believed to be Fano forces attacked their paramilitary training camp.
Head of the North Wello Zone administrator confirmed the attack and death of the military trainees in an ambush as the “extremist group” attacked the center in different directions.
The head said the attack occurred Tuesday afternoon near a place where Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) are settled. According to the IDPs, the number of casualties could be even higher.
In a separate development, the Amhara Fano National Force (AFNF) has accepted responsibility for an attack on a government defense force unit escorting ruling party officials to Debre Berhan city, about 120 kilometers north of the capital Addis Ababa.
According to the source, the defense force unit was armed with Z-23 and mortars but it was ambushed and attacked in two locations namely Akrmit and Terre.
Fano forces claimed that several soldiers were killed from the operation but it did not specify the number.
They did not specify if there were any casualties on their parts either.
The Ethiopian National Defense Force has not remarked about it at the time of writing.
