The world renowned boxer, Anthony Joshua, is injured in a road accident on Monday in Makun along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State, southwestern Nigeria.
According to local media reports, two persons lost their lives in the accident fatal accident.
The reports quoted eyewitnesses as saying that the accident occurred shortly after 11am when the Lexus SUV conveying the boxer reportedly collided with a stationary truck near the Danco Filling Station, before the Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan-bound lane.
The reports added that Joshua sustained minor injuries, while two occupants of the vehicle died on the spot.
According to the reports, some officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps arrived at the scene shortly after the crash and that investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident has commenced.
Meanwhile, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has sympathised with Joshua over the accident.
In a message addressed to Joshua on X handle on Monday, the Nigerian leader described the incident as a tragic loss that has cast a shadow over the season, while praying for the repose of the deceased and a speedy recovery for the boxer.
“I extend my deep sympathies to you following the tragic accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, which claimed two precious lives and caused you injuries,” Tinubu said.
“This immense tragedy casts a deep shadow on this season,” he added.
Tinubu said that he shared in the grief of Joshua and his family as they come to terms with the emotional impact of the incident, noting that the boxer’s character and service to the nation remained admirable even in moments of pain.
“I sympathise with you and your family as you bear the emotional weight of this unfortunate incident. As a sportsman, you have always shown courage, discipline, and unwavering love for our country. These are qualities that have made you a source of national pride,” President Tinubu said.
He called for unity and mutual support, especially, “in moments like this, we must encourage one another as brothers and sisters with a shared destiny”.
Offering prayers for Joshua’s recovery and the victims of the crash. Tinubu said: “I pray for strength, wisdom, and grace for you during this painful period. May God grant you a speedy recovery and repose to the souls of the departed.
