The African Union (AU) Commission and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) have expressed “deep concern” over escalating security problems in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the commission called on all parties to immediately stop the fighting and exercise maximum restraint, protect civilians, and refrain from actions that could further escalate tensions.
The commission urged all Somali stakeholders to resolve differences through dialogue and established constitutional processes.
The commission noted that it encourages the continuation of the efforts of Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, President of Somalia, and all political actors in promoting national dialogue, reconciliation and consensus-building towards political stability.
IGAD has expressed deep concern over reports of violence in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, amid rising political tensions and a worsening constitutional crisis.
The regional bloc said it strongly condemned all acts of violence and urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint, de-escalate tensions, and resolve their differences through peaceful, inclusive, and constructive dialogue.
“At this critical moment, preserving peace, stability, national unity, and the gains made in Somalia’s state-building efforts is of paramount importance,” said Executive Secretary of IGAD, Workneh Gebeyehu, was quoted as saying
He emphasised the need for all stakeholders to place the interests of the Somali people above political differences and pursue peaceful solutions through dialogue and consensus.
