Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the chairperson of the African Union Commission on Monday met South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit to revive the implementation of the Revitalized Agreement.
The agreement which was reached in 2018 after five years of civil conflict risked collapsing since former first vice-president Riek Machar’s detention in March.
Officials of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) were present during the talks in Juba.
Youssouf emphasised the need to accelerate the implementation process of the peace agreement, strengthen regional peace and security, and facilitate progressive democratic governance in South Sudan.
He reaffirmed the AU’s solidarity with the people and government of South Sudan in their efforts toward implementing the peace accord.
He implored political stakeholders in South Sudan to work together to complete the transitional roadmap and lead the country to democratic elections.
”The visit by AU and IGAD, demonstrates the determination of the continental and regional institutions to ensure South Sudan realise peace, stability, and democracy” said President Kiir in a statement.
The Minister of Presidential Affairs Chol Mawut Ajongo acknowledged the significance of strengthening diplomatic and political engagement with the government and other stakeholders and acquiring firsthand information on the current state of affairs in the country.
