Chad signed a $30 million financing agreement with the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) on Tuesday to modernise its education system.
The agreement was signed on the sidelines of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) Annual Meetings, held in Baku, Azerbaijan, by the Minister of State, Minister of Finance and Budget, Tahir Hamid Nguilin and the President of BADEA, Abdullah Almusaibeeh.
The financing is part of the SMARTED project, a multi-partner initiative also supported by the World Bank, the IsDB, the Saudi Fund for Development, and the World Food Programme (WFP).
The project includes the construction and equipping of 2,848 classrooms in 665 primary schools and 95 secondary schools across the country’s 23 provinces.
Beyond infrastructure, SMARTED aims to improve the quality of education through the modernization of curricula, teacher training, and the provision of appropriate teaching materials.
Particular attention will be paid to vulnerable children, girls and students with disabilities.
The agreement is being signed in a context where Chadian authorities are making human capital development a central pillar of their economic and social development strategy.
