Cairo and the European Union are stepping up diplomatic coordination ahead of an international conference on the Sudan crisis scheduled to take place in Berlin.
Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty held talks on Sunday with the EU Special Representative for the Horn of Africa, Annette Weber, focusing on preparations for the ministerial conference on Sudan set for April 15 in Berlin. According to Egypt’s Foreign Ministry, the meeting comes as the Sudan conflict enters its third year.
This diplomatic initiative, led by Germany in coordination with France, United Kingdom, the United States, the European Union and the African Union, aims to revive international efforts to end hostilities. The meeting is expected to bring together foreign ministers, as well as representatives from the United Nations, humanitarian organisations and Sudanese civil society, amid a worsening humanitarian situation.
During the talks, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s position in support of Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity, while calling for the strengthening of national institutions and warning against the emergence of parallel structures. He stressed the need for a Sudanese-led political process as the main pathway toward a lasting resolution of the conflict.
The Egyptian foreign minister also highlighted the urgency of a humanitarian truce as a first step toward a sustainable ceasefire, in order to ensure access for aid and alleviate the suffering of civilians. He condemned violence against civilians as violations of international humanitarian law, underscoring the obligation to protect infrastructure and essential services.
Beyond Sudan, the talks also addressed security dynamics in the Horn of Africa. Both sides emphasised the importance of strengthening international coordination to support regional stability, particularly in Somalia.
Egypt reiterated its commitment to enhancing Somali security capacities and called for sustainable funding for the African Union mission, in a region still marked by persistent tensions.
