The government of Burkina Faso officially launched a major agricultural support operation in Kaya on Monday, May 18, 2026, aimed at stabilizing populations returning to areas recently recaptured from armed groups.
Valued at more than CFA 2 billion, the strategic initiative is designed to assist the return and reintegration of over 100,000 internally displaced persons across the country. The program, titled “One Resettled Village, One Power Tiller,” was inaugurated in a village located roughly ten kilometers from Kaya, an area that had been occupied by jihadist groups before being cleared and reoccupied by residents following successful military security operations.
According to Amadou Dicko, the Minister Delegate in charge of Animal and Fisheries Resources, the large-scale program will benefit more than 13,000 households spread across 14 distinct regions. To kickstart local food production, the state has committed to the free distribution of 500 motorized power tillers, 1,950 tonnes of fertilizer including NPK and urea, and 260 tonnes of improved agricultural seeds. Authorities emphasize that this massive injection of resources is engineered to rapidly revive local economies, strengthen national food security, and ensure the long-term stabilization of territories recovered from insurgent forces.
During the launch ceremony, Minister Dicko noted that while reclaiming territory through military means is a critical first step, the government bears an equal responsibility to ensure that returning populations can rebuild their lives under dignified and sustainable conditions. Burkina Faso has been battling severe jihadist insurgencies since 2015, which have forced hundreds of thousands of citizens to flee their homes and created massive internal displacement. This new agricultural framework represents an administrative pivot from emergency humanitarian aid to asset-based rural reconstruction in a bid to secure permanent regional peace.
